FREEBIES in Therapy...

I don’t know about you guys, but I am frugal… I am always looking for cheap and free things to add into speech and language therapy.

Lakeshore Learning has great, great products for language and literacy development, and I was lucky enough to be able to purchase MANY of the literacy boxes when I first started at one of my schools.

They also have some great digital downloads for vocabulary and....
duh du duh…...
Lakeshore Learning offers free printables.  They always have a monthly writing prompt set up in a calendar format.  I have sent this home as homework in speech and language therapy and used in group, not for writing but as EXPRESSIVE LANGUAGE TASKS.  Having the students tell their answers.  Hey and you can’t beat free.  Click the pictures below for the links

They also are offering this month Fables, Folk Tales, and myths

Fables, Folk Tales and Myths

Use these to study the common core concepts and then have a great little discussion with the "LET'S TALK ABOUT IT" section.  Send this home as well to get parents talking about "wh" questions, vocabulary, inference, predicting, and sequencing.

Speech Room News - Love it and List It...GAMES are GREAT!

Well, I am just sitting here thinking, only about 2 weeks left until myself and the little start back to school…  I am not really sure how I feel about that, a little bitter sweet.  I contract with schools so when I am not working, I am not getting paid, but I love to spend this time with my hubby and dot!

Jenna over at Speech room news has just started a new a new linky party…

I have never done a linky so I thought I would give it a try…This month the topic of choice is….

Games in Therapy
using games in therapy is a great way to increase focused attention, turn taking, problem solving, participation, and plain old fun.  usually you will want to modify the games by making your own rules, holding onto the dice, or wands, and using your own cards or questions.  This will allow you to get multiple trials addressing multiple goals for different students.

Main Product Image

I am a traveling slp so this is easy to grab.  A little tip, if you buy just one, you can use it to reach any goal you need.  Use it as an open ended game by asking your own questions, or targets…

2.     Angry birds space

I use this game as a reinforcer after each student has taken a turn saying 10-20 targets.  I set up the tower to save time, they do a round robin to knock it down.  I have a little in a group using his vantage light to stating my turn, request help, and color of angry bird to one of his peers,
which is PRETTY DANG AWESOME!

3.      Board games like blurt or tri-bound

Again when I use these games, we usually don’t play a full game, or play by the given rules.  Board games are great but don’t limit yourself to the included cards.  A board with any of your own targets works nicely and can be used endlessly!

My kids LOVe this game.  After we attempt several trials of our targets, we play a few turns of bugs and buttons.  I don’t know what it is about slinging cockroaches but it is a lot of fun…for them and me as well…

Again when I use these games, we usually don’t play a full game, or play by the given rules.  Board games are great but don’t limit yourself to the included cards.  A board with any of your own targets works nicely and can be used endlessly!

Remember when you use games in your therapy session; don’t let the included rules or cards limit the possibilities.  One board with lists of articulation or vocabulary targets can last a long time.  It is a cheap and great way to begin to build your slp tool kit.

Looking forward to next month’s love it, link it topic organization!

Little Cloud by Eric Carle Activities and a Freebie.

Little Cloud
By Eric Carle has been a favorite for my kids this week.

We have used the story props from Kizclub that had been cut and laminated for matching and story retell.
First I passed out the props to the kids then, we predicted what we thought the story was going to be about using the cover of the book.  I read the story and as I read the the kiddos matched their prop with the page and then put them in order from left to right.

Next we discussed if our predictions were correct.
Then the littles took turns retelling the story verbally with a pointer trying to incorporate first, next, then and last vocabulary.
(we squeezed in very quick, trials of speech sound productions, but not more than 1 trial as not to loose track of the retail)
My littles used shaving cream to make clouds, write their speech sounds in them, and tell each other what their cloud looked like.  They talked about how the shaving cream felt (smooth, sticky, gooey, cold, gross, nasty) and pelt (smelt - for you non speechies!).  They thought I had lost my mind for letting them smear this on the table.

Next week we are going to use these fill in the blanks to make an art/writing cloud on blue paper with white paint (drop white paint on blue paper fold in half - let the littles tell you what their cloud made) and put this on the bottom.  Click on the pic for a FREEBIE. If you download, please follow my blog on the left! Thanks in Advance...

We talked about clouds we have seen, and what they looked like. On a cloudy day, we ran outside and looked at clouds and came back in a filled in this little cloud activity below to use glued to the bottom of the art.  Finally when we tie up the lesson, I am going to try to have a boardmaker or clipart page to send home to let the littles retell the story to their loved ones.

In Case you are wondering how to store all your stuff.  I love to laminate a envelope with a title page then use SHARP scissors to slit open the back and keep all the goodies inside. Click Below for a page with the CORRECT title on it!  Now you can make your own....Please join my blog!!

Make Learning Fun also has some print outs of the story props with letters in small squares to spell out the words with scrabble tiles.  Check it out here.

Core Academic Vocabulary for 1st Grade

Check out my newest word wall
cards for common core based 1st grade

or

Robert Marzano has found though his research that many students were doing poorly on tests simply because they didn't understand the terminology.  He has found that if you teach your students these academic vocabulary words it may greatly improve test scores.

I have gotten many of my ideas and training on academic vocabulary at the Oklahoma State Department of Education, Building Academic Vocabulary section.
